THE HUNDRED-ACRE ISLAND

Awww … I loved when the moms came and adopted the babes. Sniff….”

Well, I guess we’re on a roll with chimps. It might end up being a week of chimps. We’ll see. What can I say. This is just too adorable at the end. The narrator – if you don’t recognize him is Stephen Fry, the wonderful English actor, screenwriter, author, playwright, journalist, poet, comedian, television presenter, film director, and – apparently – explorer. (Yes! I’m a huge fan!)

THE JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME for five rescued chimps

“Sad story. Tears.”

In the 80s the U.S. government bred great numbers of chimpanzees for laboratory research on HIV and hepititis. The need to use chimps in such studies has declined more recently as different research models and new technologies have evolved. As a result, there are many “surplus” chimps who are both elderly and ill.

In 2000 the Chimpanzee Health Improvement, Maintenance, and Protection (CHIMP) Act was passed creating a national system of sanctuaries so that chimpanzees could be retired and not euthanized. Chimp Haven, a species-specific sanctuary, provides care and forested habitats for chimps retired from medical research, the entertainment industry, and those that were inappropriately adopted as pets. Chimp Haven offers a healthy, enriched environment and expert and humane care. In 2007, the Chimp Haven is Home Act was passed to close a loophole in the CHIMP Act.  This made it impossible to transfer any of the chimps back into laboratory research.

As a part of the original CHIMP Act, any further breeding of chimpanzees for laboratory use was banned for five years. In 2005 the National Institutes of Health transitioned the temporary ban to a permanent one, making it illegal to breed chimps for medical research in the United States.
