We love opera, and we love cats. What fun to find this animated version of Gioaccino Rossini‘s (1797-1868) opera, Duetto buffo di due gatti, for two female voices accompanied by piano. The singers mimic the cats’ plaintive, persuasive meows. The story is that the maestro wrote it to honor two cats who visited him each morning in Padua, Italy, his home. The cats belonged to his landlady. Rossini wanted a way for her to remember him.

The work of Rossini is combined in this charming clip with that of Emanuele Luzzati, known for his whimsical, colorful, dreamlike images and sets that were evocative of old-fashioned fairy tales.
